There’s a continuum of credulity at work here, I think. Broadsheet readers generally believe absolutely everything that’s in their papers, while readers of the major red-tops don’t necessarily particularly believe what’s in the papers, but don’t positively disbelieve it, either (this, indeed, is how they work ideologically: “I’m not saying that immigrants actually are giving us cancer, but no smoke without fire…”). But no-one who reads the Star or the Sport thinks that anything in those papers is true.
Well, except for one thing: their continued commercial viability shows that, no matter what the readers think of the articles, they at least believe in the ads.
