I was listening to Carly Rae Jepsen’s album (which is pretty good) and, as I am every time it comes on, I was poleaxed by the string swoops in “Call Me Maybe.” Reaching for a metaphor to describe the effect, I first thought of a splash of napalm, but that’s not right, it’s not that indiscriminate: the production is as precise as a drone strike is in Obama’s imagination. I googled to see if anyone else had used that metaphor before. About 400,000 results, but checking the first couple of pages none of them seem to actually connect Carly Rae Jepsen and drone strikes; instead, they are just cases where some news organization happened to carry stories about “Call Me Maybe” and drones on the same day.
