At one point in his discussion of The Hobbit, Kermode responds to suggestions that it’s been divided into three bloated films purely for commercial reasons, by insisting that Peter Jackson isn’t cynical, he’s enthusiastic. But isn’t the problem that it’s both? Jackson’s enthusiasm is enabled by the most cynical Hollywood accounting. More generally, this is the toxic structure of contemporary nerdism, in which enthusiasm insists it be treated as innocence, while its existence depends on all kinds of power relations.
