Nicki Minaj - Roman Holiday

Can’t help thinking it was a bit of a mistake for Nicki Minaj to make this the first track on Roman Reloaded. I mean, there are plenty of other good tracks on the album (“Beez in the Trap,” the “dick in your face” bit in “Come on a Cone,” the beat on “Right By My Side”; I could have done without the Chris Brown guest verse), but nothing that can live up to the genius of “Roman Holiday.”

Except - what did he just say?
“A-a-a-all you lil faggots can suck it
No homo, but I’mma stick it to ’em like refrigerator magnets”
I mind these two lines a lot less than I mind Eminem’s spectacularly misogynistic first verse. It’s problematic when a straight man uses the word “faggot,” but this seems to be a pretty funny swipe at the incoherence of hip-hop homophobia: “hey, gay men suck my dick, and I mean that in a totally heterosexual way; and to prove how heterosexual I am, I’m now going to have sex with you gay men.”

Slightly odd that Hattie Collins chooses Lady Gaga and Rihanna to contrast Monáe with. Rihanna is probably the most interesting person in mainstream R&B right now, and Gaga is, like Monáe, straddling the line between popularity and artistic extravagance, and also like Monáe (and like Nicki Minaj, too), a lot queerer than most female pop stars.
