A girl named Hibiki Tachibana attends a concert held by Tsubasa Kazanari and Kanade Amō, who form the pop duo, ZweiWing. In the middle of the concert, the stadium is attacked by an alien race known as Noise who begin killing the attendees. Tsubasa and Kanade summon mechanical battle armor known as Symphogear to fight off the Noise, but soon find themselves in a pinch. Kanade tries to protect Hibiki, but she is hit by a stray fragment of Kanade’s armor. With her suit losing power, Kanade sings a song that destroys all the Noise, but at the cost of her own life. Back in the present, Hibiki, who was able to survive, is attending Lydian Music Academy alongside her friend, Miku Kohinata, while Tsubasa, who goes to the same school, continues to fight the Noise alone. As Hibiki goes into town to buy a new CD, she comes across a Noise attack and tries to help a young girl get to safety. When they become cornered, she sings the song she heard Kanade sing that day which ends up giving her Symphogear armor.

There were rumors at one point of a tATu anime; if it had happened I think it might have been something like this (the title of which apparently means Swansong of the Valkyries, which is pretty good, although not as good a title as Bodacious Space Pirates or Dance in the Vampire Bund).

I like their dresses here, especially Lena’s, which isn’t designed by anyone particularly avant-garde (it’s by Marc Jacobs, I think), but reminds me of the soviet constructivist designs of Lyubov Popovna and Varvara Stepanova.

Also on the subject of tATu and terrorism, after professional troll Shapovalov stopped being tATu’s manager, his next project was n.A.T.o, often described as a “suicide-bomber popstar,” although AFAIK she never actually dressed as a suicide bomber.

New song from Yulia Volkova; pretty decent, though not up to tATu’s high standards. I am choosing to interpret the video as an advocacy of radical misandrist terrorism in the style of Valerie Solanas, because the more obvious interpretation would put it square in the depressing tradition of narratives that say, “if you have a gay crush, you will become a murderous psycho.”

Interestingly, this isn’t the first time Yulia has been in a video about blowing up your girlfriend’s boyfriend.

Valiant anti-fascist fighters tATu performing with the A.V. Aleksandrov Soviet Army Twice Red-bannered and Red-starred Academic Song and Dance Ensemble (a.k.a the Red Army Choir).

Well, while tATu still deserve praise for facing violence at the hands of both police and fascist groups at Moscow Pride in 2007, like everything in Russian politics, it’s a bit more complicated. tATu were there at the invitation of Aleksey Mitrofanov, a politician in, at the time, the Liberal Democratic Party. Although, as far as I can tell, the LDP is liberal on social issues (hence the support for gay pride), it is ultranationalist, and it’s leader Zhirinovsky edges pretty close to fascism himself. Mitrofanov has since left the LDP to join a new party called A Just Russia, which is an observing member of the Socialist International, but does appear to include some dubious red-brown elements (admittedly, I’m not sure if there are any political parties in Russia that aren’t extremely nationalist).

Mitrofanov got to know tATu because he published a novel, tATu Come Back, about a romance between two teenage tATu fans. I find this more than a little bizarre; it’s as if Sherrod Brown started publishing Demi Lovato/Selena Gomez fanfiction.
